You've got fleas, now what?

If your pet has had fleas in the past you know how difficult it can be to rid them from your pets and home. This information page explains the flea life cycle and the steps required to remove fleas from your home and prevent future infestations.

As you can see from the diagram, only 5% of fleas on your pets and in your home are adults. The other 95% are the eggs and growing stages of the fleas. The whole flea life cycle may be as short as two weeks in warm conditions but can take up to 1 year!

The following products sterilize the growing stages (eggs/larvae) and kill the adults

ADVOCATE

FRONTLINE COMBO

Please note – frontline on its own (and many other non prescription products) will only kill your fleas, it will not sterilize the eggs (hence you will have a recurrence of fleas quite quickly)

Curbing an infestation in your home requires the following steps

1. Applying a product which kills the fleas and sterilizes the growing eggs/larvae (advocate/frontline combo) to all of the pets in your home.

It may take up to 3 months to rid fleas from your pet as the some of the eggs and larvae can stay dormant  from 2 weeks to 1 year (under standard conditions in the UK this is approx. 3 months)

2. If you suspect there may be fleas in your home you must spray your house with INDOREX. Indorex will kill fleas and sterilize the eggs for up to one year in your home. (Ask the staff on how to apply Indorex. Please note Indorex is toxic to fish!)

For cats, once there are no fleas on your cat, a preventive injection which sterilizes the fleas and thus prevents infestations can be applied. A PROGRAM INJECTION  given by your vets works as a preventative measure, but is not to be used by itself if your cat has fleas. It lasts 6 months – we’ll send you a reminder to have it repeated!
