A) Vaccination – protects against canine hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, distemper virus and parainfluenza virus
1st vaccination at 8 weeks of age
2nd vaccination at 10 weeks of age
Then a booster yearly (one year from the 2nd vaccination).
It is fine to let puppies into your private garden, although we advise to clean up fox fecal matter beforehand. Your puppy can be let out to interact with other dogs 2 weeks after the 2nd vaccination.
Go Green! Feel free to leave an email address for vaccination reminders!
B) Flea treatment/worm treatment –Advocate spot on – monthly
Due to high incidence of lungworm, a life threatening disease, we advise all dogs to have monthly spot on application of advocate.
Advocate is the only licensed medication to prevent lungworm.
It should be used monthly as a routine to effectively curb the flea life cycle and to prevent lungworm. Advocate protects against fleas, flea larvae, roundworms, lungworm and mites (mange). Advocate is safe from 8 weeks of age.
C) Tapeworm treatment (1 Droncit tablet per 10 kg every 3 months)
Droncit is a treatment for tapeworms. Tapeworms can be transmitted by fleas, foxes and rodents. We advise tapeworm treatment with Droncit once monthly until 6 months of age. From 6 months old, we advise Droncit every 3 months. The rest of the worms are covered by advocate!
D) Diet - Andersons puppy food
Our Andersons puppy food is a high quality, palatable, gluten free hypoallergenic diet. We aim to provide a well priced high quality diet for your pet. We advise dry food as a staple diet to promote healthy teeth and good digestive function (without the flatulence!). Please ask for a sample.
E) Spay/Neuter
If you are not planning to breed your pet we strongly advise to spay/neuter your pet at 6 months of age.
It has been shown that spaying a bitch before her 2nd season greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Spaying a bitch prevents hormonal uterine infections (pyometra).
Castrating males can help curb aggression and reduces the risk of prostate problems in an older male dog.
F) Microchip
Recommended at the time of 2nd vaccination or at time of spay/neuter (whilst they are asleep!)
G) Insurance
We advise pet insurance for all pets. When choosing a plan we advise a life cover policy. If your pet falls ill with an ongoing affliction a life cover policy will cover your pet for the whole term of affliction, rather than a year long policy.
Some recommended insurance companies – Agria, Pet plan, Direct line.
H) Kennel Cough Vaccine
Kennel Cough is an extremely contagious disease. It is a syndrome comprised of a group of respiratory 'bugs' (viruses and bacteria). Kennel cough can be caught where dogs congregate. It is transmitted by dogs breathing/coughing on each other. We recommend a kennel cough vaccine once yearly, as kennel is caught just about anywhere, not just at kennels.
If you require a kennel cough vaccine for kennels, we advise to immunize your dog two weeks prior.
